The Black Mountain Roller Volume might look like something straight out of a steampunk anime. However, this is the first volume pedal I’ve genuinely enjoyed using.
In this Black Mountain Roller Volume review, I take a closer look at how this unique volume pedal works and whether it’s worth adding to your setup.
Disclaimer: Black Mountain sponsored this content and I got to keep the pedal. However, whether the content is sponsored or not, the company has no say in the things I mention in the video or this post.
What Is the Black Mountain Roller Volume?
The Black Mountain Roller Volume is a different take on a traditional volume pedal.
Instead of rocking your foot back and forth, you place your foot on the pedal and roll it forward and backward. Because of this, the control feels more natural and stable compared to standard designs.
This approach makes both volume swells and expression-style control easier to manage.
First Impressions
Right out of the box, the Black Mountain Roller Volume feels solid and well built. That’s exactly what you want from a pedal you’ll be stepping on constantly.
I’ve used several volume pedals over the years. However, none of them have stayed on my pedalboard for long.
This one feels different. The design alone makes you want to give it a proper chance.
What Is It Like to Use the Roller Volume?
At first glance, the design might seem like a gimmick. However, once you start using it, that idea disappears quickly.
From the first volume swell, the Black Mountain Roller Volume feels natural. More importantly, it feels stable. I never had the sense that I might lose balance while using it.
For me, this is easily the best volume pedal experience I’ve had.
In addition to volume swells, I was also able to mimic a tremolo-style effect. That’s something I would not normally attempt with a traditional volume pedal.
Overall, the control feels precise and predictable, which makes a big difference in real playing situations.
Is the Black Mountain Roller Volume Good?
It feels a bit strange to be this excited about a volume pedal. Still, the Black Mountain Roller Volume genuinely solves a problem I’ve had for years.
If you struggle with traditional volume pedals, this design might be exactly what you need.
The build quality is excellent. At no point did I feel uncomfortable stepping on it or worry about durability. According to Black Mountain, the internal 500k potentiometer is rated for up to 7 million cycles.
In addition, the tuner output opens up more flexible routing options beyond basic volume control.
For me, this is the best volume pedal I’ve used so far.
Final thoughts
The Black Mountain Roller Volume offers a unique approach that actually works in practice.
It combines a different control method with solid build quality and real usability. Because of that, it stands out in a category that usually feels very standard.
If you have never been fully comfortable with traditional volume pedals, this one is definitely worth checking out.
